SEED PRODUCTION

Pacific Oysters (Crassostrea gigas)

Manatee produces Pacific oyster seed (Crassostrea gigas) for commercial grow-out by licensed shellfish growers.

Key Characteristics

SpeciesPacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas)
UseFor commercial grow-out by licensed shellfish growers
Available grades1,400µm, 1,800µm, 2,000µm, 2,380µm
Production locationCourtenay, British Columbia (Gartley Point Hatchery)
Primary marketsVancouver Island
AvailabilityMay – August
Flavour Profile: Not applicable. Manatee sells oyster seed for grow-out, not finished market-size oysters. Final flavour characteristics develop at the grower's site and depend on local waters, husbandry, and harvest timing.

Production Method

Hatchery-produced single oyster seed for commercial grow-out. Seed is produced and reared in Manatee's hatchery/nursery systems, then supplied to growers for their own beach, suspended, tray, or other approved grow-out methods.

Broodstock & Spawning

Oyster broodstock are conditioned in the hatchery using controlled seawater flow, aeration, and live microalgae. Spawning is managed under hatchery conditions, with eggs and sperm collected and fertilized before transfer into larval rearing tanks. Larvae are fed live microalgae and reared through settlement, then graded and grown to commercial seed screen sizes. Specific broodstock sources and spawning schedules vary by production season.

Environmental Characteristics

We are planning lifecycle assessment for oyster operations in 2026–2027. Preliminary data suggests an environmental profile similar to geoduck due to comparable production methods and filter-feeding biology. Like all bivalves, oysters:

  • require no external feed
  • filter water while growing
  • sequester carbon in shells

Packaging & Minimum Orders

Oyster seed is sold by screen size for commercial grow-out orders. Minimum order is 1 million seed. Expected delivery May–August, with larger seed generally available later in the season. A 25% deposit is required to secure an order. Packaging confirmed at time of order.

Manila Clams — Manatee Holdings

Why Choose Manatee Holdings Shellfish?

Three-Generation Quality

We've been perfecting shellfish cultivation for 35+ years. Our current methods combine traditional family knowledge with modern hatchery science and independent environmental verification.

Verified Environmental Performance

We are among the first BC shellfish producers to commission independent lifecycle assessment. Geoduck LCA complete (August 2025, Blue Food Performance, ISO 14040/44, EF 3.0, cradle-to-gate); oyster and clam assessments planned (2026–2027).

Full Traceability

Every product is traceable from hatchery spawn through harvest and delivery. We know exactly when, where, and how each shellfish was produced.

Consistent Supply

Hatchery production enables year-round availability (subject to harvest conditions) rather than reliance on wild settlement.

Food Safety

CFIA registered facility. Regular water quality testing. Biotoxin monitoring compliance. Full traceback systems.
